What is Mousse?

Mousse is a light, fluffy, and airy dish that can be either sweet or savory. In desserts, whipped cream or egg whites are delicately folded into a creamy and smooth base mixture along with ingredients like chocolate and fruit puree.

This recipe offers a healthier twist on the classic mousse. By using fat-free yogurt, cacao powder forms the rich chocolate base, and for a healthier alternative, date syrup is added. These three ingredients are mixed into a creamy consistency, creating a light, healthy, and incredibly creamy mousse dessert.

Ingredients for Chocolate Yogurt Mousse

  • Yogurt: Plain Greek yogurt forms a creamy textured base with a slightly tangy taste.
  • Cacao or cocoa powder is used for its rich chocolate flavor and healthy nutritional benefits.
  • Date Syrup or Honey: Healthier, natural sweetener alternatives with a deep, caramel-like flavor.

How to Make Chocolate Yogurt Mousse

Whether you’re making milk or dark chocolate mousse, the process is the same (see recipe below).

Combine Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, combine the plain Greek yogurt, date syrup or honey, and cacao or cocoa powder. Use a whisk or an electric mixer. Mix over low speed until the ingredients are well incorporated and the mixture becomes smooth and creamy. Try not to overmix, as yogurt may separate and become watery.

Taste and Adjust: Taste the mousse and adjust the sweetness or cacao powder according to your preference.

Refrigerate: Spoon about 3 oz. (80 g) of the mousse into serving glasses or bowls while it is still creamy. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to 1 hour before serving.

Garnish: Garnish with beautiful piped rosettes and fresh mint leaves, a dollop of whipped cream, a sprinkle of cacao powder, or grated chocolate for an extra touch of indulgence.

Serve: To enjoy the rich chocolate flavor, it is best-served cold. If you have any leftovers, cover and refrigerate them to enjoy them for the next day or two.

Cacao Vs. Cocoa Powder

Cacao and Cocoa Powder both originate from cacao beans, undergoing distinct processes.

Cacao Powder: Raw, cold-pressed unroasted cacao beans, ground into powder. It’s purer, less processed form, rich in nutrients and antioxidants, offering a rich, intense chocolate flavor with slightly fruity notes. Ideal for those seeking maximum health benefits from chocolate.

Cocoa Powder: Cacao beans roasted at higher temperatures. It’s more processed form powder with fewer nutrients and has a milder chocolate flavor. Commonly used in baking, hot chocolate mixes and is more readily available than cacao.

The choice between cacao and cocoa powder depends on personal preference, desired flavor intensity, and whether one prioritizes nutritional richness or a more familiar taste.
