What are Hasselback Potatoes?
Hasselback potatoes are a savory masterpiece where whole potatoes are thinly sliced, leaving them partially connected. This unique technique allows them to fan out slightly while baking, resulting in a wonderful blend of crispy edges and tender insides. Seasoned with herbs and sometimes cheese, they offer a visually stunning and flavorful twist on traditional roasted potatoes.
Why Are They Called “Hasselback” Potatoes?
Hasselback potatoes are often associated with Swedish cuisine. They were named after the restaurant “Hasselbacken” in Stockholm, Sweden, where they were first introduced. However, they have gained popularity worldwide and are enjoyed in many regions as a delicious and visually appealing side dish.

How to Make Crispy Hasselback Potatoes
Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
Prepare Potatoes: Wash, scrub and pat dry the potatoes. Place a potato on a cutting board and use chopsticks (or a wooden spoon) on each side to prevent cutting all the way through. Make thin slices across the potato, about 1/8-inch apart, ensuring you don’t cut all the way through. Repeat with all the potatoes.
Seasoning Mix: In a ziplock bag/bowl, combine minced garlic, thyme leaves, salt, ground peppercorns, and oil. Close, and shake the bag to mix the ingredients well.

Coating the Potatoes: Place the sliced potatoes in the ziplock bag with the seasoning mix. Seal and gently shake to coat the potatoes evenly, ensuring each slice gets a bit of oil.

Bake: Arrange the coated potatoes on the sheet. Transfer to the preheated oven. Bake for about 40-45 minutes, or until the potatoes are golden brown and crispy on the edges, and the centers are tender.
Cheese: Sprinkle potatoes with grated Parmesan cheese during the last 10 minutes of baking.

Garnish: Once out of the oven, sprinkle the potatoes with chopped fresh dill to add an extra burst of flavor, enhance visual appeal, and introduce a touch of freshness.
Serve: Enjoy the potatoes while they’re still hot to taste the enticing blend of crispiness, flavor, and tenderness!
